Stop regulators policing private beliefs

Professional regulators are increasingly using their powers to investigate and discipline people over lawful opinions expressed outside of their work.

New Zealanders deserve a system where teachers, nurses, real estate agents, and other professionals are judged on their competence, conduct, and ability to do their jobs, not whether unelected regulators agree with their personal beliefs or political views.

ACT MP Todd Stephenson is proposing changes to ensure professional regulators stay focused on protecting the public and maintaining professional standards.

"I call on Parliament to protect free speech in regulated professions by ensuring professional regulators focus on competence and conduct, not lawful political views or personal beliefs."
