Compensate students for Treaty compulsion

The University of Auckland’s mandatory ‘Waipapa Taumata Rau’ course forced students to pay for their own indoctrination. Politically slanted content around the Treaty and tikanga offered little in the career value, while denying students the opportunity to choose alternative courses that align with their interests.

The University has now restored student choice and academic freedom by making the course optional for most students. However, this doesn't restore the time and money those students were forced to spend.

The course also negatively impacted the academic records of students who scored poorly because they were unengaged with the subject matter, or disagreed with the premises being taught.

It’s only fair that students are compensated for the time and money spent on a compulsory course they didn’t choose. Will you add your name in support?

“I call on the University of Auckland to give financial credit to students forced to take now-voluntary ‘Waipapa Taumata Rau’ papers.”
